Commissioner Sandra Little Brown (President Pro Tempore)
Jefferson County Commissioner – District 2
Commissioner Sandra Little Brown is a native of Jefferson County who grew up in a small city called Lipscomb, Alabama. She is the third eldest of nine children born to Zack Mixon Jr. and the Late Eva Mae Mixon on June 4, 1955. She was educated in the Birmingham Public school system and attended Lawson State Community College.
Commissioner Brown is a female entrepreneur with over 20 years’ in sales. She is the owner of JJs T-shirts and Team World located in the historical Jones Valley Merchants District. For many years her business has served as the building block to the community and since that time her interest in community growth and development has become a number one priority.
In 1997, Sandra Little Brown was elected to the Birmingham City Council as the representative for District Seven. While on the City Council she chaired the Birmingham Parks and Recreation & Cultural Arts Committees where she served as Park Board Commissioner and chaired the Birmingham Regional Arts Commission. During that time the city allocated thousands of dollars in grant funds to various art organizations and city-wide festivals that were held in downtown Birmingham. Also, during her term she was instrumental in implementing the plan to help build new schools in Birmingham many of which are completed today namely: George Washington Carver, P.D. Jackson-Olin and Wenonah High School along with several middle & elementary schools. Sandra Little Brown also spearheaded the building of the new Roosevelt City Fire Station that now sits on Bessemer Super Highway.
Over the years, Commissioner Brown has received several honors and awards in recognition of her valuable, personal commitment and distinguished service to the citizens of this community.
She was the recipient of the following: the Metro Birmingham Branch of the NAACP Autherine Lucy Foster Her Story Award (1999); Lawson State Community College Meritorious Award Recipient Award (1999) the Birmingham Educational Citizenship Tour Committee Education P.A. Excellent Award (2000); the Birmingham Firefighters Association Local 117 Appreciation Award (2001); several awards by the Division of Youth Services in support of the Fox 6 Kids & Jobs Program; special recognition from the Alabama State House of Representatives and Senators.
Commissioner Brown is an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Riley Station where she serves as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Sanctuary Choir, Progressive Matrons and Evangelistic Team. One of her most precious moments within her church was being named “Mother of the Year” in 2008.
Commissioner Brown is the wife of Mr. Elbert Brown; mother of four children, Lannard, Latrice, Jerome, Jerome Jr., two small grandchildren Bayleigh and JayShun. She has a Cocker Spaniel “Nubian” who is her beloved puppy.
