About Us

The Jefferson County Family Court Adolescent Mentoring Program (AMP) provides a one-on-one relationship between high-risk youth and caring adults in order to reduce the youth’s further involvement in the court system, enhance family functioning, and increase commitment to education/employment. Youth ages 11-18 years, residing in Jefferson County, are referred to AMP by their probation Officers. Services are provided at no cost to the youth and are funded through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

Our Mission

AMP’s mission is to reduce juvenile delinquency by facilitating the creation of one-on-one relationships between high-risk youth and caring adults that are consistent and long lasting allowing the youth to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential.

AMP Goals

  1. Reduce juvenile delinquency and gang participation
  2. Improve academic performance
  3. Reduce school drop-out rates
  4. Develop strategies to recruit and maintain mentors serving hard-to- reach populations

The Mentor Commitment

Mentors will see youth a minimum of three hours per week, including one face-to-face contact, and complete a six-month commitment. The mentors will act as role models for the youth providing them with support, encouragement, advice, and opportunities to gain new skills and experiences.

Mentor Eligibility Requirements

  1. Be at least 21 years of age
  2. Have never been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted of child abuse or molestation
  3. Have a clean criminal history for a period of seven years prior to application
  4. Not be a user of illicit drugs
  5. Not use alcohol or controlled substances in an excessive or inappropriate manner
  6. Not have a child currently involved in Jefferson County Family Court

Transportation Policy

It is the policy of AMP to allow mentors to transport mentees in their own private vehicles. The program administrator must ensure that all mentors meet the following criteria prior to transporting the mentee:

  • All mentors must own a car or have access to reliable insured transportation; all safety equipment including blinkers, lights, brake and back-up lights, seat belts, tires, and brakes must be in good operating condition.

  • All mentors must possess a valid driver’s license and present proof of auto insurance; a record of insurance will be maintained in the mentor’s file and will be updated on an annual basis.

  • All mentors must undergo a driving record check. Eligibility will be determined based on results.

  • AMP requires that mentors obey all traffic laws, and use seat belts and headlights at all times.

  • Mentors must also avoid taking medication or using any other substances that might impair their ability to drive.

  • If an accident occurs while the mentor is engaged in mentoring, it should be reported to the program administrator promptly.
